課程概述 |
This senior-undergraduate-level (and above) and seminar-format course aims to offer comprehensive understandings about the post-Mao China's environmental governance. It is without doubt our human being is facing great challenge from the nature, calling for more research about what is new and effective environmental governance at all spatial scales. In addition, China’s dramatic transition from Mao's communist centrally planned system to the post-socialist market-like platform has made itself
become the topmost CO2 emission producer in the world. Whether or not China can play what kinds of role in environment protection and resource management certainly deserves more attention than it has receives now. |

課程目標 |
After taking this course, students are expected to learn twofold: (1) in the theoretical part, how to use the scalar perspective to analyze transformation of any economies like China, (2) in the empirical part, how to discuss China's transition from viewpoints of different agents behind the environmental change. |

課程要求 |
Graduate students are required to read all three articles and make a critical comment for each article (academic writing) with word count at least 800 words. Undergraduate students are required to do two articles with the equal standard of evaluation. Relevant data (pieces of news, other written or video materials and so on) to support your comments are highly encouraged to be attached with you weekly report. This part is 25 %.
In university seminars, students are expected to talk and discuss loudly and voluntarily. (Analects of Confucius (lun yu), the most inspiring ancient Chinese book, is basically the conversation notes between Confucius and his followers, isn’t it?) Your active participation in the class is very important. In addition, each student must be rotated as a chair for discussion of a paper about one hour (it means three students are appointed for every week). You must read the assigned article very carefully and
give us your thoughtful review on the article. You are also advised to read your classmates’ weekly reports critically. This part is 25%. Rotation of each paper will be finalized after Week 3 at the latest.
For other 50% as term projects, undergraduate and postgraduate are assigned differently. For the former, there will be a two-person team-work-based “mock” grant proposal that is to be submitted to international aid organizations in order to solve any kind of environmental-related issues in China. Undergraduates need to decide what particular environment issues in which specific locality and ask: (1) why this issue is so critical that it needs some grants from overseas; (2) why you design what aid
program to fix the problem; (3) why you believe your proposal is important and effective? For the latter, students need to write up a research proposal about how to push existing literature on China’s environmental governance a bit further. This research proposal exercise is to ask you to think of what are the important and interesting theoretical gaps in the existing literature. Your proposal will be marked at A++ if you reach the following achievement: (1) theoretically innovative, (2) methodologically operational, (3) informatively contented, and (4) logically written. |
